Activities in and around Muizenberg
Our House lies adjacent to Zandvlei, the only functioning estuary on the False Bay coast. Zandvlei is protected by the Greater Zandvlei Estuary Nature Reserve and provides habitats for reptiles, amphibians, fish, mammals (e.g. the Cape Clawless Otter (Aonyx capensis), Porcupine (Hystrix africaeaustralis) and Water Mongoose (Atilax paludinosis), as well as 149 bird species. Wetlands, like Zandvlei, are very important habitats for birds, which include local residents as well as migrants from Europe, Asia and Africa. We are especially proud to provide a home to a pair of breeding Fish Eagles.
Two sea kayaks are available to our guests to explore Zandvlei with its prolific bird life and spectacular mountain views.
Muizenberg is known for its colourful bathing boxes and its long white beach that has the added bonus of warmer water for bathers. Behind the beach are added extras like putt-putt and the super-tube (waterslide). "The Surfer's Corner" is a Cape Town hot spot of surf culture for learners and professionals alike.
Established surf schools offer surfing lessons as well as surfboard and wetsuit rentals.
Walking and Hiking
Besides walking on Muizenberg's endless white beach take a scenic walk along the cat walk towards Kalk Bay or take an easy stroll around the vlei and watch the birds, paddlers and small sailing boats on the estuary. There are numerous hikes on the mountain trails above Muizenberg where you can enjoy breathtaking views of False Bay.
